Get into Games 2015

Published: 28th April 2015.

Games students learn how to springboard into the industry

Last Wednesday, we hosted our annual talk series with video games industry professionals specifically for Anglia Ruskin students. Bringing together Computer Games, Games Art and Audio Music Technology courses, the event is hugely successful at connecting students and people working in Cambridge’s thriving games cluster.

The event attracted over 100 people, eager to hear more about the local industry which employs over 1000 people and is recognised as a creative hotspot by Nesta and most recently, UKie (UK Interactive Entertainment) the only trade body for the UK's games and wider interactive entertainment industry.

Matthew Holland, Design Team Leader at Jagex opened the event with a talk focussed on game development disciplines and how hard to specialise. Other speakers included ex-students Tom Linthe now a GUI Developer, Frontier Developments, Laura Mengot-Chapa, a demo-artist intern at ARM, Dylan Vadamootoo, Sound Designer at Guerrilla Cambridge and Matthew Power, Senior Graphics Designer at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

All the presenters agreed on several common themes, primarily to hone your skills, make stuff, network and internships present real opportunities for enthusiastic, passionate people to gain real industry jobs.

Following the talks, business and student delegates headed to a Student Games Showcase and networking reception.  Organised by students themselves, the showcase gave games professionals a sneak-peek at the work in progress from all the courses. Businesses were very impressed with the work and the students’ thirst to connect with industry and secure jobs in the future.

The Get into Games Industry Talks and Student games Showcase act as the perfect warm-up to Brains Eden, the large games festival held at Anglia Ruskin University on Friday 26th – Monday 29th June. For more information, please visit
