The Golden Window - A film by Shreepali Patel

The Golden Window

Cambridge School of Art's award winning flimmaker, Shreepali Patel and Addenbrooke's Neonatologist Consultant, Dr Topun Austin have collaborated to create a piece that explores the inner workings of NICU.

Filmed at the Rosie Maternity Ward at Addenbrookes Hospital, the film focusses on the use of hypothermia to preserve the brain cells of newborns who suffer trauma during birth.

The Golden Window was filmed at the Cambridge hospital over a 72 hour period, and features interviews with staff, and charts the journey of Baby J, who was cooled top prevent further neurological damage during a difficult birth.

"There is a window in which you can change the death signals sent to the brain cells, cooling stops this signalling process. When you re-warm the baby, the brain cells no longer receive that signal to go down the death pathway."

There will be a talk led by Shreepali Patel and Dr Topun Austin on Tuesday 18th March at 7:00 pm prior to the screening.
